I often get asked whether it is in fact worth buying organic?

There is still some controversy as to the nutritional value of certain foods due to the mineral depleted soil we now have.

Personally, I would be very wary about consuming second hand steroids and antibiotics in my meat and fish. To be honest, that's another whole blog in itself!
Today I want to talk about organic fruit and veg, nuts and seeds...

According to the most comprehensive scientific analysis to date, organic food has more of the antioxidant compounds linked to better health than regular food, and lower levels of toxic metals and pesticides. So much of what I read is USA based, but this research was carried out at Newcastle University, UK.

The research, led by Prof Carlo Leifert, concludes that there are "statistically significantly, meaningful" differences with a range of antioxidants being "substantially higher" - between 19% and 69%. This equates to eating 2 -3 extra portions of fruit and veg!

This does not surprise me...but percentages and statistics can arguably be produced to back either side of an argument. What interests me is the science behind it....

Eating plants, we know, is healthy. They give us vitamins, minerals, soluble and insoluble fibre and antioxidants. They are also healing and restorative. 

So the fibre part is easy to explain. Human and animal body cells have a semi-permeable membrane around the cell. Plant cells have a cellulose cell wall. This cell wall is of great health benefit to us humans. During the process of digestion and absorption, the soluble part of a plant nourishes us, whereas the non-soluble cell wall becomes our much needed fibre. I describe it to my clients as a bottle brush, cleaning our digestive tract and removing the unwanted fatty plaques from our gut!

Now for the interesting bit.

Plants are self-sufficient. They don't need us to propagate and grow.

They also have their own inherent defence system against bugs and diseases. This is what is so important when we think about food as medicine! When we take on board plants (fruit, veg, seeds, nuts) we take on board their medicinal properties; their ability to fight.

A crop that has been sprayed with pesticides will lose the ability to fight natural enemies itself.

The plants adapt with each generation to be less and less capable of fighting. This is tragic because it is this very characteristic of plants that is vital to us!

Therefore, I conclude that more than ever I respect the value of organic plants.
