When we hear our oncologist say that chemotherapy is advisable as a necessary treatment, what do we immediately envisage?

Feeling very poorly? Hair loss? Sickness?

In the 6 years between my mum's chemotherapy and mine, many improvements had been made to the anti-emetics ( anti-sickness medication ) given as part of the 'cocktail' of drugs: I remember Mum feeling (and being) so sick.

Nausea and vomiting are still common side effects of chemotherapy for many though. Current data suggests that about 70% of cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy experience post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting.

If you experience nausea and vomiting, you'll be given medication to help control your symptoms.

Anti-emetics can be given in a number of different ways nowadays including:

  • as a tablet or capsule – which can either be swallowed or placed under your tongue to dissolve

  • as an injection or drip

  • as a suppository

  • through a patch that you place on your skin

You'll be advised to continue to take your anti-emetics even if you don't feel sick, because they'll help stop your symptoms returning. However, as with any foreign chemical in our bodies, there are side effects with anti-emetics which include constipation, indigestion problems, hypo-tension, insomnia and headaches.

In an ongoing study using ginger with standard medications for reducing acute and delayed post-chemotherapy nausea, ginger appears effective in significantly lowering side effects.

Here are a couple of ideas for introducing fresh ginger:

Fresh Ginger Tea

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup sliced ginger root

  • 6 cups water

  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice

  • 1-2 sprigs of mint

  • 2 tbs honey (or to taste)

Method:

  1. Put ginger and water into pot and bring to a boil.

  2. Cover and let simmer for 20 minutes.

  3. Add lemon juice and mint and let sit.

  4. Add honey to taste and enjoy!!!

 

Noodle Soup (chicken optional)

Ingredients:

  • Coconut oil - 1 scoop

  • 2  carrots - sliced thinly

  • 1 onion

  • 2 cm of fresh ginger - grated

  • 2 garlic cloves, grated

  • 1 stick of celery- sliced thinly

  • 1/4 teaspoon sea salt

  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  • 1 litre of water ( or chicken broth)

  • 1 'sheet' uncooked egg noodles

  • 1 tbsp Tamari soy sauce

  • 200g shredded, cooked chicken (optional)

  • 1 handful of baby spinach

  • Small handful of fresh coriander ( less if not a preferred flavour)

Method:

1. Heat pan and add knob of coconut oil

2. Add carrots, onion, celery, Tamari soy sauce, ginger and stir for a couple of minutes

3. Add the water ( or stock ), garlic, salt and pepper and bring to the boil

4. Add the noodles and chicken

5. When noodles soft, throw in spinach and coriander.

Keep the left-overs in the fridge. Often when on chemo, the cooking smells are too much and small portions are all you fancy. Both the tea and the soup are as nice cold in the summer as they are hot!
