Television star and host Larry King has revealed today that he has been treated for lung cancer.

The 83-year-old celebrity and host of Larry King Live on CNN was diagnosed during a routine annual check-up. When doctors X-rayed King’s chest, a small spot appeared on the scan.

Speaking to Us Weekly, King described: “they said to me the spot looked pretty small. I then did a CAT scan then a PET scan and then he [the doctor] said to me, ‘You have lung cancer, but it looks very small, in the beginning stages.’”

Because King’s lung cancer was only stage 1, the tumour was removed quickly through surgery.

King underwent surgery on 17 July in Los Angeles, California. Doctors removed 20% of King’s lung.

Thankfully, because the lung cancer was caught early, King has been able to avoid chemotherapy.

Still, King’s situation demonstrates the importance of early detection.

Lung cancer typically doesn’t cause visible or obvious symptoms until the disease has progressed to later stages. That’s why regular check-ups and scans can be important, especially in older age.

Had the tumour grown or metastasized to other parts of the body, treatment would have been much more extensive.

King is open about the fact that his long-term history as a smoker is connected to this recent scare. King smoked for 30 years, sometimes smoking up to three packs a day. A heart attack prompted him to change his health habits and give up smoking.

In an interview with Extra, King reflected: “I said to the doctor [about the lung cancer diagnosis] ‘Is this connected with that?’ Absolutely.”

Chest scans are one of the best ways to pre-empt a cancer diagnosis, or to catch lung cancer in its early stages.

If you have a history of smoking, or have reached older age, consider asking your GP or healthcare provider about regular screening.
